Jannik Sinner spoke of the heartbreaking loss of his aunt upon returning to Australia.
The world number one enjoyed the Christmas season with his family before returning to Melbourne to defend his title. But he admitted it was a “strange Christmas” for his family, as his aunt died at the end of the year.
Sinner had a close relationship with her aunt. He dedicated his U.S. Open victory last year to her, but she died a few weeks later.
Sinner felt a sense of loss over the holidays, and described how difficult it was to celebrate Christmas without his aunt. “It’s always nice to spend Christmas at home with my family,” the two-time Grand Slam champion said at the Australian Open.
“This year has been very different for me because I lost my aunt. Just different, more intense in some ways. Feel like you’re missing out. Life sometimes gives you a positive and good thing.
