After participating in the bare minimum of four regular season events required to maintain his membership, Jon Rahm has reportedly made the decision to skip the DP World Tour Championship. Additionally, the Spaniard hopes to be included in Luke Donald’s Team Europe roster for the Ryder Cup the following year.
Rahm placed among the top 50 in the DP World Tour Rankings, earning him a spot in the DP World Tour Championship. Only 50 players are allowed to compete in the £8.2 million event, which is the final one on the tour schedule.
The 29-year-old has won a record three titles at the Earth Course, making it one of his favorite tournaments. He has chosen not to go, though.
A representative informed Golf Magic, “Jon Rahm has not entered the DP World Tour Championship.”
Earlier this month, Rahm was also absent from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Subject to an appeal regarding the fines he received for joining the breakaway LIV Golf Tour at the end of last year, he has been permitted to rejoin the DP World Tour.
“The fines don’t really appeal to me. The two-time major champion recently stated, “I don’t plan to pay the fines and we keep trying to have a discussion with them (the DP World Tour) about how we can make this happen.”
“I want to perform in Spain. It’s another matter entirely whether or not they allow me to play.
Rahm made his debut earlier this year after reportedly spending £450 million to join the Saudi-backed league. He hopes to compete in the 2025 Ryder Cup, but he wants to keep his spot on the DP World Tour.
To maintain his tour card, he needed to compete in just four tournaments. Rahm hasn’t played in any more tournaments after meeting that requirement by participating in the Olympics, the Open de Espana, Dunhill Links, and Andalucia Masters.
The former world No. 1 has reduced the number of tournaments he planned to play in the last few months of the year after welcoming a baby daughter into his family.
Although it hasn’t been verified, some reports claim that Rahm regrets accepting an offer from LIV Golf.
According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, Jaime Diaz of Golf Digest stated, “I am absolutely certain that if Jon could return the money to the Saudis and return to the tour, he couldn’t write the check quickly enough.”
