‘Just Get a Perm at This Point’: Fans Rush to Simone Biles’ Defense as Critics Call Her ‘Nappy’

After receiving criticism about her hair for years, Simone Biles just can’t seem to get away from internet trolls.

What began as a joke on September 23 evolved into a conversation that was repeated about the athlete’s hair. Sydney, a tattoo artist from Scottsdale, Arizona, released a video in which she shows off the neck tattoo she had done two days prior on Biles.

The back of a person’s head and neck are only partially visible in the video, which was intended to show the before and after effects of a “Made in Heaven” neck tattoo.

The Shade Room asked their followers, “#Roomies can you guess which female icon recently got this tattoo?” even though Biles was tagged in the post.

Fans could tell right away that Biles was the topic because of the way her hair was arranged in her trademark messy bun. She frequently chooses to compete in the Olympics or regular competitions with the low-maintenance look.

Her writing was recognized by someone who said, “Simone Biles We know the back of her head anywhere.”

However, some people escalated the joke by making fun of the 27-year-old’shairmaintenance.

“I knew that was Simone; she ain’t never had her hair done,” someone remarked. “Like why does she do this just get a perm at this point sick of her,” remarked a second, irritated person. “It’s the nappy hair and high ponytail that gave it away for me,” commented another.

Supporters of Biles declared, “The self hate smh no one has amazing hair like us,” and “Black women negatively commenting on another black woman’s hair is very… anti-black.” They don’t like us at all!

For years, Biles has endured criticism regarding her hair before emerging as the most decorated gymnast in the world in 2016. She’s had to either clap back or outpace fans in their enthusiasm because of this.

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles posted a picture of herself on her Instagram story a while back, wearing her hair pulled back in a ponytail. “Don’t come for me about my hair,” the writer wrote. IT WAS DONE, BUT IT’S LIKE 9,0000 degrees outside and [the] bus has NO AC. Oh, and a 45-minute ride,” she said, gesturing with what looks to be a fan.

“I’m going to hold your hand when I say this,” she said in a second video on her Instagram story. When you want to remark on a black girl’s hair in the future. Simply put, don’t.

A few admirers have voiced their displeasure with her edges not being as sharp or polished as they would have liked.

She stated, “It’s unfortunate that the majority of the backlash we receive comes from within our own community,” in a July interview with Elle this year. I don’t really mind if my edges aren’t perfectly round.

She went on, “I used to be concerned that people wouldn’t think my hair was professional,” she continued. However, I’m no longer ashamed of it.

The eleven-time Olympian has been concentrating on her next project outside of athletics instead. Recently, Biles disclosed her intention to launch a food company named “Taste of Gold” in Houston, her hometown, in collaboration with The Playmaker Group. Early 2025 will see the restaurant’s opening at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to local website Click2Houston.com.

Biles expressed her excitement about working with The Playmakers Group and their hardworking team to help open a new restaurant at her hometown airport in response to the news. Since I have a strong passion for food, Taste of Gold aims to provide our guests with an exquisite dining experience that includes award-winning signature menu items infused with some of my favorite flavors.
