However, he has since acknowledged that was overly optimistic and promised to keep putting

Woods admitted, “I didn’t do a whole lot of things right today.”

“I think I had three three-putts today after making that putt on the third hole.

“I didn’t give myself a lot of attention today, and I didn’t hit my irons very close.

“To get something going on the weekend, I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow.”

Among the observers who have recommended that he retire is Colin Montgomerie.

“Physically, I feel a lot better than I did at the beginning of the year,” Woods stated.

“I haven’t played a lot because of the difficult end of last year.

“I believe that I have improved over the course of the year.

“I wish I had had more time to practice, but I’ve been reserving it for the majors in case I take a major setback and have to withdraw from it.”

“Hopefully, next year will be a little better than this year,” he went on.

“Earlier in the year, I felt like I could play a little bit more. I believe my optimism was a tad bit excessive. I have to work out much harder and continue making the same kind of progress as we have.”

Woods, Patrick Cantlay, and Xander Schauffele are all gone early tomorrow.
