A heated exchange reportedly occurred between Rory McIlroy and other players during Tuesday night’s PGA Tour player meeting. A player who wished to remain anonymous at the meeting disclosed that World No. 227 Grayson Murray had disparaged the Irish golfer.
The player claimed that Murray was upset about the merger of LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. According to reports, the golfer demanded the resignation of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and criticized him for the choice. A verbal spat broke out between Murray and other players at the meeting, including McIlroy, after he attacked the PGA chief. The Irishman, a devoted LIV rebel, only “responded to Grayson when he was going off on tangents,” according to the player.
Regarding the contentious discussion at the PGA Tour player meeting, the player who wishes to remain anonymous stated, as cited by the Golf Channel:
“Rory McIlroy only answered Grayson when he was ranting and swaying, telling him things like, ‘We don’t trust you, Jay!'” This is your moment to step down! You told us falsehoods!
He added:
“I don’t know what caused it, but Rory tells Grayson to just play better, and that didn’t go over well with the crowd.”
Remarkably, he continued by saying that Murray, a recent Korn Ferry Tour victor, finally lost his cool and yelled at McIlroy to “F*** off!”
Multiple sources from within the PGA Tour reported the incident, even though the two golfers’ conversation remained private. Considering that there have been rumors of players demanding Jay Monahan’s resignation following the player meeting, it’s noteworthy that McIlroy has adopted a relatively unbiased stance. Athletes who criticized the PGA chief for the unexpected merger decision included Shane Lowry.
At the Tour meeting, players voiced their “anger” over the merger of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
It is important to remember that the players’ meeting on the PGA Tour occasionally got out of control. Johnson Wagner, who was present at the Tuesday meeting, described it as “contentious.” The golfer disclosed after the meeting that the majority of the participants were “furious.” According to him, “players were calling for (Monahan’s) resignation” and “there was a lot of anger in that room.”
Golf Magazine claims that Monahan acknowledged the conversation with the players was “heated.”
“I would describe the meeting as intense,” he stated. Undoubtedly tense.”
It’s important to remember, though, that Monahan stated the PGA and LIV merger was a well-informed choice. The head of the PGA Tour stated that he “accepts the criticisms” and that the action was taken for the “betterment” of the game.
