At the Emiliana Romagna Grand Prix, McLaren put on another strong performance, and both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are optimistic about the future of the team.
In response to yet another fantastic race weekend, McLaren has issued a warning to Red Bull and Max Verstappen.
Following his first Formula 1 victory at the Miami Grand Prix earlier this month, the British driver claimed he only needed one more lap to defeat Verstappen after finishing second at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri led the fastest lap in Miami before front wing damage caused his race to end prematurely. The Australian went on to finish fourth in Imola, and both of his teammates are optimistic about McLaren’s future.
In response to a question about whether his recent performance gave him faith that he could consistently disrupt Verstappen’s dominance, Norris stated: “After a few tracks, there’s no reason to dispute it.
“As we witnessed today, they still have certain areas where they excel, so I don’t think we’re at their level yet. However, there may be some areas where we’ve improved, which is encouraging. There are sections where we can exert more force..
“I’m happy that we can compete against them in more races going forward.” Piastri also repeated Norris’s remarks, pointing to McLaren’s advancements in “conditions we’ve struggled in” in recent years.
Piastri remarked, “Miami felt like a really strong weekend.” “I felt so strong right here. In my opinion, that was the best result we could have achieved from the race. As for me, I’m thrilled because I feel like I’ve gained some positive momentum over the past two weekends, which is something I’ve been attempting to do more of.
As a team, I believe we’re demonstrating that we can compete for victories in a variety of settings and courses, most of which are ones in which we’ve previously found difficult. There will inevitably be ifs and buts.
“After qualifying, I had a feeling it would be difficult, and today certainly confirmed that.” This week has provided a lot of inspiration and good things. I believe that collectively, we are evident. Additionally, I believe that over the past two weekends, I’ve been incredibly strong.”
