Bryson DeChambeau’s LIV Golf boos at US PGA show just how much things have changed

During the PGA Championship, fans heckled and jeered Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, displaying their hostility towards the golfers.

This is Bryson DeChambeau’s first appearance at the PGA Championship since the previous year, when he was jeered prior to his third round.

When DeChambeau, 30, was first introduced to the New York gallery, he heard boos and jeers at Oak Hill. It didn’t really help that he was paired with fellow LIV Golfer Brooks Koepka, but the 2020 US Open champion took the brunt of the criticism. But, some customers also made the decision to applaud the two-time US PGA champion, creating a more divided welcome.

Less than a year after joining LIV Golf and receiving a suspension from the PGA Tour the summer before, it was their first major pairing. Jim Nantz even acknowledged during his commentary the unfriendly reception.

“It’s intriguing,” Nantz said on CBS. Two of our guys are on different tours. Not a friendly greeting. In all the events dating back to last summer, I have not heard that.

But DeChambeau remained unmoved. “I’m not bothered. It’s not like that big of a deal. No matter what, they’re going to do that,” he remarked later. “Look, you have to expect it here; this is New York.” And I’m grateful to the fans for treating me in that way—it’slike,”OK, cool, no problem.”

“I have no issues in either scenario. It’s great if I am loved. And if I’m not, guess what? It’s fine. That’s just the way things are. Even today, it was enjoyable. Koepka asserted that she was unaware of the jeers.

After, he remarked, “I didn’t hear any good chirps, nothing creative.” To be honest, a lot of it is repetitious. I don’t mean to bother the fans, but I like it when they are imaginative and say something amusing.

Really, it’s difficult to hear. You could hardly hear anything under the umbrella, so it was difficult, and everyone was tied up.” After shooting a second consecutive four-under-66 to take the lead into the final day, Koepka made the remarks.

DeChambeau opened the week with a 66, but he finished fourth on Saturday with an even-par 70. Both players held their positions on the final leaderboard, with Koepka emerging victorious, having defeated Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler to become the four-time major champion.
Along with Kurt Kitayama and Cameron Davis, DeChambeau tied for fourth place. The powerful American earlier this month expressed optimism that another player on LIV Golf would be able to duplicate Koepka’s achievements after a full year.

“I believe that we LIV Golfers are as ready as ever to compete in major championships,” he stated at a Singaporean press conference. “Gives us the chance to occasionally have a little extra time to prepare for those majors.

“However, I believe we all possess the strength to perform well and take home a significant title. It’s just a matter of time because there are many accomplished champions here who know how to complete the task.
