Following the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend, Lewis Hamilton left an interview early. On Thursday, he became agitated once more over a question regarding his future with the Ferrari team.
Lewis Hamilton shot back at a question from a journalist ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, saying his decision to join Ferrari does not need “vindicating.”
After an unforgettable Japanese Grand Prix two weeks prior, the seven-time Formula 1 champion stormed out of a post-race interview because he was irritated by a question about Ferrari. And when the topic was brought up again in Shanghai on Thursday, he looked irritated.
Hamilton is switching from Mercedes to Ferrari at the end of this year, and it appears he made the right choice based on the results of the first four races of 2024. The Silver Arrows are well behind the leaders Red Bull, with the Italians being their closest rivals.
However, Hamilton lost it when that was brought to his attention, saying, “I don’t feel like I need my decision vindicating.” Since the moment I made the choice, I have remained true to what I knew to be right for me.
I’ve never questioned it, and I’m not influenced by what other people have to say. People will keep talking s**t for the remainder of the year, even as of right now.
And I’ll just have to carry out my prior actions. It will be an exciting time for me, and only you can know what’s best for you.” Because of his contract, Hamilton will remain with Ferrari through the very end of the 2026 season, which is just a few weeks away from he’s 42 birthday.
With the new engine regulations, he will have at least one season in Formula One. Red Bull has dominated under the current rules, but Hamilton has bet that Ferrari will be in the best position to benefit from a shift in the power dynamics that often occurs when the sport enters a new era.
Furthermore, he won’t be the only veteran to survive. Fernando Alonso, who just last week inked a new multi-year contract with Aston Martin, intends to continue racing in Formula One even though he will be 45 in 2026.
Although they were teammates at McLaren for just one season in 2007, Hamilton and Alonso’s disagreement nearly brought the team to its knees. However, they now have mutual respect for one another, and the British player is eager to face off against his Spanish rival in the future.
“It’s not a short-term issue; I plan to race well into my forties,” he stated. It’s great that [Alonso] is still with us because I’ll be racing for a long time to come. I’m hoping he continues a little while longer as well.”
