After struggling all weekend at Augusta National, Shane Lowry has opened up about playing alongside LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson during this year’s Masters final round.
Shane Lowry, who had earlier said he felt intimidated by the six-time major champion, said that playing the final “fun” round with Phil Mickelson was the high point of his disappointing Masters tournament.
After finishing on eight over par with a final-round 74, the Ryder Cup star was unable to break par in any of the rounds. The Irishman did, however, receive compensation on the last day when he was able to observe up close three-time champion Phil Mickelson, who made his 101st Major cut.
Having previously played with Mickelson, Lowry acknowledged in 2020 that he had never felt intimidated on the golf course until he was paired with the LIV Golf star. He lavished praise on the two-time Masters champion, though, suggesting that he has since changed his mind.
After winning the 2019 Open, the winner stated, “Phil is good.” I enjoy having golf games with Phil. More than anything, I’m just kind of sitting there enjoying the shots that he made.
“I was eager to go out and play a Masters Sunday with him when I saw the draw last night. He was true to his moniker. He made some incredible shots. On the eighth hole, he made a shot from over in the trees that I doubt anyone else could attempt, much less pull off, but it was entertaining nonetheless. After carding a total of 19 bogeys at Augusta National, the world number 36 was less than pleased with his own performance.
“Not very good,” Lowry remarked. “Obviously, I’m a little disappointed. I didn’t play particularly poorly during the week; I just made a lot of bogeys. Nothing catastrophic or major went wrong—just a lot of boonies. This week has probably been the most memorable week of the year for me. I regret not giving it a better go this year.
Yes, I do hope to be able to continue running this out here for a few more years. It’s now concluded. I’m going to start over the following week and head to Hilton Head to see what I can accomplish.
“One of the only times I’ve ever been intimidated on the course was when I played with Phil Mickelson about three or four years ago in Quail Hollow up in Charlotte. I played with him on the Saturday, and I remember I finished my round and I said to my coach Neil afterwards that I felt different on the golf course, I felt like the crowd was huge,” Lowry said in a 2020 interview.
“I shot level par, which was mediocre, but it felt strange and a little intimidating because Phil was doing his thing and shot seven under. He’s such a celebrity, and I’ve long looked up to him.”
