Tommy Fleetwood of England has given an update regarding Ian Finnis, his caddie, as he gets ready to compete in the 2024 Masters in the absence of a major draw.
Before the 2024 Masters, Tommy Fleetwood of England responded to his detractors and gave an update on his absent caddie Ian Finnis, saying he “can’t win.”
Due to his impending son’s birth, Finnis was not present for Fleetwood at the 2018 U.S. Open.
On the eve of the first major of the year, the Englishman told reporters, “Other than that, he’s done every tournament with me.”
For this week’s competition, Fleetwood, 33, has enlisted the help of Augusta National caddie master Gray Moore.
According to the Augusta Chronicle, Moore has since retired from that role and is currently a regular caddie for the club.
Finnis missed last week’s Valero Texas Open as well. Fleetwood stated that Finnis is “desperate” to return, but he did not specify what ailed him.
Fleetwood, who is paired with American duo Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa for the first two rounds here at Augusta, stated, “He’s not been well all year.”
He’s currently recuperating at home and receiving the appropriate care.
“Hopefully, he’ll return to the field as soon as possible. Yes, life is definitely different in his absence.
It seems as though we have attended every tournament together for the past eight years or so.
“Well, we just hope for the best for him. It is better for all of us if he recovers sooner rather than later.
It has been wonderful that everyone has been inquiring about him. I’m sure he’ll be itching to return here as quickly as possible.”
Over the past few years, Fleetwood has made a number of major championship appearances.
Despite his success on the DP World Tour and in Ryder Cups, he has six top-five finishes to his name and has not yet cracked the majors.
Before his first round, Fleetwood stated in an interview with Telegraph Sport that he wants to disprove the opinions of his American detractors.
Fleetwood chuckled, “You’d think so,” in response to the suggestion that he should be familiar with “everything” about this course at this point.
To his detractors’ paper, Fleetwood said, “It doesn’t both me.”
He went on, “It’s funny, but when I win and have a streak of inconsistent play, they criticize me just as much as when I win and am really consistent.
Thus, no matter what I do, I can’t really win. I just keep working hard and try to be honest with myself. All you can do is that.
This week, Fleetwood is not the only player without their usual caddie.
Mick Donaghy is not playing for Tyrrell Hatton, another English prospect, as the Glaswegian fell and injured his shoulder during last week’s LIV Golf event in Miami.
Last week, Justin Thomas also broke up with renowned caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay.
Thomas hasn’t given a thorough explanation for their breakup.
This week, he has turned to Matt Minister. The most well-known association of Minister is with Patrick Cantlay.
