Phil Mickelson’s LIV golf career may be coming to an end, and Bubba Watson may follow in his footsteps.
After joining LIV Golf in 2022, Phil Mickelson has struggled with his form. It’s possible that the six-time major champion will take on a non-playing role in the breakaway league as his next move.
It’s possible that Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson will join Bubba Watson at LIV Golf in an off-the-field role once their league contracts expire.
Mickelson was the impetus behind the beginning of the player migration from the PGA Tour to the LIV arrangement because of his allegiance to the Saudi-backed league, which was already established before its inaugural event in June 2022. Though he has been a regular on the circuit ever since winning six majors, the player’s playing career may be drawing to an end soon.
The 53-year-old’sbiographer,Alan Shipnuck, surmises that the non-playing captain position could be the subject of his next contract with the Breakaway League.
Talor Gooch, the 2023 individual champion, and all of the team captains received four-year contracts from Greg Norman and company. Players will reconvene with league management at the end of 2025, according to Shipnuck, and Mickelson and Watson may opt out of the on-course competition.
Mickelson has only placed in the top 10 of 20 events on the LIV circuit after failing to regain the form that elevated him to the status of one of the greatest players in history during his PGA Tour career. Even two-time Masters champion Watson has had difficulties.
In his first full season on the Saudi-backed series, RangeGoats captain Watson has only once finished in the top-10; his best LIV performance came in Tulsa last May. The former Green Jacket winner has discussed his future on the circuit in the past but hasn’t been able to find his best form.
Speaking at LIV Greenbrier last summer, Watson said he would be open to supporting the RangeGoats if that was what his teammates wanted. “If my team didn’t think I was good enough to play, they could fire me and replace me with another talented golfer,” I told them.
“Until they tell me to stop, I’m not leaving.” I love cheering on the young men. Everyone is trying to get better as a golfer and as a person. I have the privilege of mentoring three young fathers and parents who play golf. In the event that they require assistance, I want to be there for them.
Mickelson has also made the commitment to stop playing golf in recent years, but there’s a catch. The American’s career Grand Slam can be completed with one more win at the U.S. Open, the only major championship title he has yet to win.
And if he could finally cross the finish line in his home Open, that would be where his playing career would end. He declared to Golf Digest in February 2022 that he would retire if he won the US Open. That would be my last tournament. I will have accomplished my career Grand Slam and won’t need to prove anything more.
