The 2024 season got underway with Max Verstappen winning the first two races and Red Bull finishing one-two with Sergio Perez in second, painting another bleak picture for their rivals.
Even with Red Bull’s continued hold on Formula 1, Lando Norris is still opposed to FIA intervention aimed at slowing down the reigning champions.
In their pursuit of the most dominant title victories in the history of the sport, Max Verstappen and his team broke even more records last year. And after Red Bull once more had a perfect start, the tale appears to be the same this term.
The two races that have been held thus far have been easily won by Verstappen, with Sergio Perez starting strongly and finishing second each time. They will be the overwhelming favorites going into each and every Grand Prix weekend as the season goes on.
It is a dire situation for their competitors who, in spite of their greatest efforts in the factories and on the track, have not been able to get close to F1’s overwhelming power. However, McLaren star Norris feels it wouldn’t be right, despite complaints from fans about the lack of competition and some calls for Red Bull to be slowed down.
“Obviously, when you watch, you wish there were more battles at the front,” he remarked. There is nothing I can do about it. Red Bull and Max are both performing admirably. None of it can be discouraged.
“Is it as thrilling as everyone hopes it will be? Not at all. But in any other sport, it’s the same. A person who performs better is going to prevail. Thus, even in football, you can simply decide to make changes if one team consistently performs better than the others and say, “Oh, this is boring now.”
“In sports, superior performance is a result of intelligence and cunning on the part of the individual. That’s all there is to it; nothing should be taken away from it; everything is well deserved.”
The season-opening success of Red Bull has been overshadowed by an off-track power struggle that puts Christian Horner, the team principal, in jeopardy. However, the 50-year-old was happy with his performance on two very different tracks, which gives the team great confidence moving forward. It hasn’t yet affected the results.
“The drivers have done their part to deliver us a second one-two of the season already,” Horner said, praising the cars’ outstanding performance throughout the weekend. We’ve maintained the momentum from last year, which is a credit to everyone’s tremendous work ethic, and I believe you can see that the team is performing at an exceptionally high level both on the track and back home in Milton Keynes.
“For us, the RB20 was an aggressive step up from the RB19, but we’ve come to another circuit and it’s performing well again after a strong showing in Bahrain. We will face another, very different challenge in Melbourne, so let’s see how we do. We are eager to maintain this form for the duration of the season since we have begun it in the best possible way as a team.
