On the penultimate day of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, world number one Scottie Scheffler defeated Wyndham Clark and Shane Lowry, and Rory McIlroy struggled mightily and lost out on the enormous jackpot.
After a tough final round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Rory McIlroy shot 76, his best PGA Tour score since the Masters the previous year.
Although McIlroy was one of the favorites to win the £3 million prize going into the competition, he struggled all weekend and finished four shots over par on the last day.
The star player from Northern Ireland, McIlroy, was disappointed with himself after his iron play let him down all weekend.
“Another great week off the tee,” he said in a statement to reporters. I think I also experienced a positive feeling from the putting. The past three days, I putted pretty well. The iron play alone disappointed me. The past few weeks have been the same story. The longer clubs, the woods, feel so good, and then the irons don’t feel all that good. I’m having trouble with a left miss with the irons.”
“It’s difficult for me to swing the woods and the irons in two different ways right now, I feel like. However, everything else feels fairly good, so I think I’ll be okay if I can tighten the irons.”
The world’s top player, Scottie Scheffler, put on an incredible display throughout the weekend, winning by five strokes over Shane Lowry and Wyndham Clark to claim the prize money. He finished with a six-under 66 to win his seventh PGA Tour championship.
On the last day, Scheffler was the best player in the field on the greens, seemingly putting his past putter struggles behind him. It was worth noting that he was using a new mallet putter.
Scheffler said following the victory, “Yeah, I had a solid round of golf. Teddy, his caddie, and I had a great start, and I just tried to maintain the momentum. Today, I avoided looking at a lot of leaderboards. I sort of remained in my own little world, trying to keep moving forward.
“It’s quite special anytime you can win one of Arnie’s tournaments. It’s an absolute honor to win here because he had a great impact on the game of golf and us professionals.”
Regarding Scheffler’s commanding performance, McIlroy continued: “Anyone can suddenly win a tournament or go on a winning streak, but it’s amazing how consistently Scottie has been putting in his performances every time he tees it up. Subsequently, his performance this week has been extremely impressive. This is a very difficult golf course, so to be 6-under today and start the round leading the field is quite remarkable.”
