Rory McIlroy, a former Ryder Cup teammate of Ian Poulter’s, has tempered his views on the LIV Golf setup in recent months.
Previously, McIlroy had been among the most critical of LIV, having witnessed some of his closest friends, such as Poulter, depart the PGA Tour in order to enter the breakaway league. However, McIlroy seems to be growing more receptive to the idea of the LIV circuit as a potential peace agreement between the rival tours approaches.
Majesticks GC co-captain Poulter, who now feels sorry for his former Ryder Cup teammate who he believes was misled, is one man who will undoubtedly welcome the change in attitude.
Gulf News was told by the Englishman, “I feel bad for Rory.” “It’s clear that his opinions and the information he was given to support them were possibly a little deceptive, don’t they? He’s therefore in an awkward position because it doesn’t look as good as it did before.
“But listen, I don’t need to call attention to Rory specifically because everyone is aware of who has said what. In this business, everyone knows each other, so I don’t need to call anyone out individually. You should exercise caution when criticizing a product while simultaneously demanding payment for your move, even though you didn’t receive it.
Although McIlroy had previously declared that he would sooner retire than sign with LIV, he might be willing to make the biggest U-turn of all, if recent reports are to be believed. Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, the Northern Irishman’s former agent, believes that McIlroy had a “10 percent” chance of pulling off the unthinkable given his recent softening of position.
It is not surprising that the remarks were directed towards the four-time major winner before he makes his PGA Tour comeback this week at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach, Florida. McIlroy responded to the remarks made by his former agent by saying, “I spoke to Chubby. Perhaps at the beginning of the year, I saw him in the Middle East.

At the PGA National Members Club on Thursday, Mcilroy will begin his fifth tournament of the year alongside the reigning champion Chris Kirk and the winner of the Mexico Open, Jake Knapp, in rounds one and two. Poulter is also back in action this weekend, where he will compete in the opening round on Friday at LIV Jeddah alongside Paul Casey and Sebastian Munoz.
