Due to the lack of LIV Golf representation, Talor Gooch says that if Rory McIlroy wins the Masters this year, there should be an asterisk placed against the major.
Talor Gooch is getting quite the habit of his opinions going viral on various topics.
Consider his July 2022 statement that the feeling of winning LIV Golf Portland with Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces must have been comparable to winning the Ryder Cup.
Gooch declared, “I haven’t participated in a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.” “However, I find it hard to believe there’s a significant difference.”
Behind him, Pat Perez, Patrick Reed, and Johnson snickered at his take.
Naturally, Gooch made the remark in the heat of the moment and later realized it was a funny one.
The American, 30, did not go so far as to say that he “regretted” saying it. He told Telegraph Sport, “I’ll just comment that I was in the moment.”
Gooch is now certain to face similar criticism after voicing dissatisfaction over not receiving an invitation to Augusta National for the Masters this year.
According to Gooch, Australian Golf Digest, the tournament should have an asterisk next to it if Rory McIlroy completes the career grand slam in April.
According to Gooch, the four main championship governing bodies have “demonstrated that they are not aligned with LIV.”
Joaquin Niemann, Gooch’s fellow LIV pro, received an unexpected invitation to the Masters this year.
It must be acknowledged, though, that the Chilean’s unique invitation was extended in honor of his January triumph at the Australian Open.
Niemann has also won amateur titles in Latin America in the past.
Gooch stated to the newspaper:
“There will be an asterisk if Rory McIlroy manages to accomplish his [Career] Grand Slam without the participation of some of the world’s top players.”
That’s the way things are. Everybody benefits, in my opinion, whenever the majors manage to bring the greatest players in the world to town.”
His remarks generated a lot of discussion on X. And to put it mildly, the response was intriguing.
“A major victory for Brooks,” a user commented. “Is it not true?”
Another said, “The majors should want the best field regardless of their tour, even though Gooch is wrong for the time being.”
A sarcastic remark was made by this person: “It will be difficult to watch without Gooch. I’ll just smile and take it.”
“Talor Gooch can cry all he wants, but his narrative is wrong,” said a different comment.
When Gooch began competing in LIV Golf events, he was comfortably ranked among the top 60 players in the Official World Golf Ranking.
He was among a group of LIV players who challenged the PGA Tour’s decision to ban him for it in court.
Gooch attempted, but was unable, to obtain a temporary injunction to keep him from participating in the FedEx Cup playoffs following his LIV switch.
He finished 2023 as the individual champion after an outstanding LIV career, but he is now ranked 427th in the OWGR.
He is not in any of the majors for 2024.
Recently, he revealed he is spending some of his LIV cash on bull riding.
