Acknowledging that he will miss competing in the Masters, Louis Oosthuizen blasted the OWGR for failing to acknowledge the breakaway LIV Golf League.
Louis Oosthuizen opened up about the likelihood of missing his first Masters since 2008 and acknowledged he’s come to terms with not playing major championship golf any more.
The South African dropped from as high as the fourth spot in the world to 137th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
The former Open champion’s decision to leave the organization and join the lucrative LIV Golf League is, of course, the reason for that decline.
Oosthuizen would need to finish in the top 50 players in the OWGR in order to get to Magnolia Lane one week before the 48th Masters got underway.
Before this week’s International Series Oman, Oosthuizen told Gulf News, “I knew it was inevitable when I decided to join LIV Golf.”
Several League of Legends players have visited the Arabian Peninsula, including Oosthuizen.
“I knew the day would come when I couldn’t participate in an Augusta-style tournament,” he went on.
“To tell the truth, I’m having trouble getting around that golf course at the moment because it’s so long.
“Compared to 2009 and 2010, there are three irons and seven woods into the par-4 holes.
“There’s more seven woods and three irons into par 4s there than there was in 2009 and 2010. I’ll miss it because it’s an unbelievable experience.
“I really believe the golf course is a little bit too long for me now, even though it’s a great tournament and golf course.”
Oosthuizen’s remarks coincide with a resurgence of dissatisfaction within the LIV Golf ranks regarding their non-acknowledgment by the OWGR.
Greg Norman called the situation “laughable,” but the Australian’s position was unpopular with one PGA Tour pro.
While Oosthuizen is grateful that he can still compete in the Open, he feels that League of Legends players are not “getting what they deserve.”
He stated: “I kind of knew when I signed up for LIV Golf that we wouldn’t be receiving any World Ranking points—if you can still call them that—anymore.
“I’m glad I can still play in the Open, but I’ve come to terms with not being able to compete in the majors. It’s unfortunate that great players aren’t receiving their due, and hopefully OWGR will act swiftly to address this.”
“I believe that a total overhaul of the system is necessary. Should they choose not to award us with World Ranking points on LIV Golf, they ought to modify the mechanism by which Majors are awarded spots on every global tour, or something similar.
“I can’t believe there’s no solution to it; those guys have a lot more experience than me sitting on boards and doing their things.”
