Jon Rahm’s switch to LIV Golf has made a major statement in the world of golf, and he’s been welcomed by team captain Joaquin Niemann who thinks he’s the perfect fit
Though he will make the competition much tougher, Jon Rahm’s decision to join the Saudi-backed league excites LIV Golf captain Joaquin Niemann.
After making the contentious decision to leave the PGA Tour earlier this month, Rahm signed a record-breaking £450 million contract, making him the highest-paid player in LIV Golf. Although Rahm maintains that he does not play golf for financial gain, he acknowledged that the enormous offer had some influence on his decision to sign with LIV.
The Masters Champion learned to play golf in Spain, a country known for its team mentality. The current captain of Torque GC, Niemann, is eager to play Rahm in the future and thinks this will make him ideal for League of Legends.
As Niemann stated on LIV’s “Fairway to Heaven” podcast, “I think Jon (Rahm) is going to bring a lot to the team event.” “I believe that his skill as a player and his ability to work well in a team have been evident since the Ryder Cup. With the exception of the US, almost every other nation plays team sports from birth.
“You grew up leading a team and playing for teammates, and Jon is one of those players who came from Spain to play professionally. We now have a clearer understanding of the significance of the team element. We also didn’t have this chance when playing professional golf.”
Niemann continued by discussing how Rahm’s involvement will help LIV grow and how, even with the record contract, it remains a wise investment. Neimann continued, “I think it will be really important to have Jon as a captain, as a team leader, and how he would do with his teammates.” Playing against him would therefore be enjoyable as well. He’s among the best players, in my opinion.”
Rahm faced backlash for signing with LIV, having previously opposed the Saudi league until they made him an irresistible offer. “If I won $400 million, would my way of life alter? After LIV was released, Rahm stated, “It would not alter in the slightest. “To be honest, with everything I’ve accomplished, I could retire right now, lead a happy life, and never play golf again.
“I want to compete against the greatest players in the world, and I play because I love the game.” I’ve always been drawn to legacy and history, and the PGA Tour currently possesses both.” But after abandoning the PGA Tour, Rahm said he was thrilled to be joining the “growing league” after inking the record contract with LIV.
After the announcement of the decision, Rahm posted on X, saying, “I am proud to join @livgolf_league and be part of something new that is bringing growth to the sport.” “I am very excited for the future and I have no doubt that this is a great opportunity for me and my family.”
