LIV Golf star and 2020 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau has explained how he and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods shared the same skill when learning how to play golf
Bryson DeChambeau has revealed that he began learning to play gold left-handed – an ability he shares with Tiger Woods.
Before departing to join LIV Golf in 2022, DeChambeau won eight events on the PGA Tour after turning professional in 2016. The 30-year-old won two events since joining the tour last year and was one of the biggest golf stars to join the Saudi-funded breakaway league.
DeChambeau won his maiden major championship in 2020 at the US Open held at the Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. During an interview with the Good Good podcast, DeChambeau disclosed that he initially learned to play golf with his left hand before transitioning to his right.
He shares this ability with Woods, who also learned to play golf left-handed from his father, Earl. DeChambeau has recounted how he started out as a left-handed golfer and why he decided to change to a right-handed swing because of his father, John.
“I picked up a golf club as soon as I could walk, pretty much, and I started swinging left-handed,” DeChambeau remarked.
“Exactly like Tiger Woods did with his father. I don’t know if anyone knew, but Tiger swung first and left-handed. He mimicked his father’s left-handed swing by swinging his hand in the same direction, making it appear as though he was left-handed to him.
“It was exactly the same thing I did; for the first few days, I learned to swing it left-handed as a child. After my dad turned me around, I began to hit with my right hand and simply got better at it.
DeChambeau moved up to fourth in the overall standings of the 2023 LIV Golf season by winning two of the last four events. The former US Open champion’s team, Crushers GC, competed for the team championship thanks to his victories at Greenbrier and Chicago.
Talor Gooch won the individual title, but DeChambeau and Crushers GC prevailed as a team. Anirban Lahiri, Paul Casey, and Charles Howell III were on the team that had DeChambeau as captain.
LIV’s 2024 season is scheduled to begin in February, and DeChambeau will be competing for both the individual and team titles. But when the New Year arrives, DeChambeau will have a new opponent in the league.
After agreeing to a £450 million contract with LIV Golf, Jon Rahm will participate in the league in 2024. Rahm’s team affiliation is still unknown; the first competition takes place in Mayakoba, Mexico on February 2.
