George Russell was unhappy with his Mercedes race engineer at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after he had asked about team-mate Lewis Hamilton’s progress during the race
George Russell swore at his race engineer after not getting the answer he wanted to a question he asked over the radio during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Other than fending off Ferrari’s challenge for second place in the championship, Mercedes had nothing to play for in the season finale. They were only four points ahead of the Italians going into the year’s last race.
And with 16 laps remaining for Russell on Charles Leclerc’s gearbox, it was all very tight for Mercedes. The British player asked his team for updates on the current championship standings, obviously under pressure.
He asked his race engineer, “How is Lewis getting on?” but received a vague response. Indeed, he’s performing admirably right now. The response was, “He’s in a fight of his own.”
The lack of details irritated Russell, who yelled, “What the f**k does that mean? How are we performing in the competition? Are we doing okay?” However, the response he received was simply, “The best race we can do is what we can do. We’re doing great right now.
Hamilton was in a real fight with Carlos Sainz, while Russell was facing off against Leclerc. With ten laps remaining, he was leading the Spaniard by one position while Russell was trying to ensure he was not losing too many points to the other Ferrari.
As things stood, Mercedes had enough to maintain the championship.
