Charlie Woods has been making waves in the golf world lately. After winning a high school state championship, the American has eclipsed his legendary father Tiger.
At the age of 14, Charlie Woods has become the high school state champion golfer, an accomplishment that his 82-time PGA Tour winner father Tiger was never able to accomplish.
The teenager helped The Benjamin School win the Florida state championship for the fourth time by shooting rounds of 78 and 76 over 36 holes. Woods Jr. came fourth out of five players from Benjamin School to win the title, finishing 26th overall in the individual competition.
The legendary Tiger Woods of the PGA Tour was present to witness his son and his teammates win at the Mission Inn Resort and Club—a trophy he was unable to obtain while attending Western High School in Anaheim, California.
Even though Woods Jr. got to brag, Tiger missed out on a state championship opportunity in high school because there wasn’t a state event being held by the California Interscholastic Federation at the time. Not surprisingly, Charlie’s ascent in the golf world has been extensively chronicled.
In recent years, the young man has competed alongside his father in the parent-child PNC Championship at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club. Their best result came in 2021 when the Woods team finished second behind John Daly and John Daly Jr. Given Charlie’s continuous fitness issues, it is unclear if he will participate in this year’s tournament with Tiger.
Tiger’s last competitive outing came at this year’s Masters Tournament in April, but his week was cut short during round three after being forced to withdraw during the third round due to an ankle injury. Six months on, Woods released an update on his fitness last week, where he revealed he was still not fully recovered despite his ankle problem clearing.
My ankle is fine,” the 2019 Masters champion said. “Where they fused my ankle, I have absolutely zero issue whatsoever. That pain is completely gone. It’s the other areas that have been compensated for. But all the surrounding areas are where I had all my problems and still do.”
In recent weeks Woods has been spotted out on the course a number of occasions, often alongside son Charlie. Earlier this month the teenager competed in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf Championship in Louisiana, and his famous father acted as caddie, as Tiger carried his son’s bag across all 54 holes without a noticeable limp.
The 14-year-old was playing after the 15-time major winner once again took the lead in September after qualifying with rounds of 71 and 66. Charlie stated at the time, according to the PGA Tour, “It’s great.” We simply remain in our own little universe.
