Dumped LIV Golf star discusses return as Graeme McDowell weighs in on comeback

Andy Ogletree was dropped from the LIV Golf lineup following his disastrous summertime finish at Centurion; however, he is expected to make a comeback thanks to a stellar Asian Tour campaign.

Following his initial expulsion from the circuit after just one event, American golfer Andy Ogletree has disclosed that he has had discussions with several LIV Golf teams. Ogletree is expected to make a permanent return to the circuit.

Ogletree is expected to reclaim his spot on the LIV setup in 2024 as he has proven to be the man to watch on the Asian Tour’s International Series thus far this year. The American has virtually confirmed his return to the Saudi league and has talked up his future ahead of this week’s Hong Kong Open.

Ogletree stated that he has already spoken with a few of the 12 teams in LIV Golf, saying, “I’m trying to figure out which team fits best for me. I’ve been in conversations with a couple of different teams.”

And rather than talking as much about how everything is moving, my conversations have focused more on the team I plan to play for. I’m in a really exciting moment right now, and I have a big decision to make about which team I want to play for in the future.

I’m hoping to stay with that team for a very long time. It seems to me like a decision in college golf. Which team would you like to play for? Which squad do you think you belong on and which one offers you the best opportunity to play the best golf? It’s really thrilling. I have been extremely busy these past few weeks despite trying to win a golf tournament.

Ogletree is no stranger to the LIV setup having been invited to compete in the breakaway circuit’s first ever event at Centurion Club in June 2022. Things did not go to the plan for the former U.S. Amateur champion though, after he finished dead-last across the three days, which saw him cut from the roster for future events.

Amid his impressive form in 2023, Ogletree has been acting as an injury reserve throughout the campaign alongside his commitments on the International Series. This time around he will have the season-long support of a team, and the American is more than aware of the importance of the decision ahead of him.

“You have to approach it from a broad perspective; you have to consider the team’s methods of transportation and lodging as well as the resources they provide from a physical and training standpoint,” he stated. It’s a significant choice. As much as I’d like to say that it’s simple to simply concentrate on a golf tournament, there are moments when it’s more difficult than it looks. However, I’m doing the best I can, taking each day as it comes, and attempting to turn off everything else once I’m on the course.

One man who has hailed the bounce back ability of Ogletree is fellow LIV star Graeme McDowell, who has backed him for more success, this time on the breakaway circuit.

“He has had enough exposure to it [LIV Golf] this year and the couple of chances that he’s had, he’s taken them,” McDowell stated in an interview with Mirror Sport. I predict that he will excel in the upcoming year. I got to know him better this week than I have because I spent a lot of time with him. I enjoy his outlook. He works very hard.”
