Ralf Schumacher explains Lewis Hamilton is ‘in danger’ of not fulfilling his Ferrari contract

Ralf Schumacher explains how Lewis Hamilton could walk away from Ferrari early

Hamilton has agreed to a long-term contract with Ferrari, initially running him through to the end of the 2026 season.

If things go well, both sides have the option to extend the deal, which would give Hamilton the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a next-generation car in 2026, when Hamilton will realise just how big an opportunity it is to add to his collection of world championships. Ralf Schumacher has told Sport1 why he thinks there is a risk Hamilton may not even make it that far in his Ferrari career.

Asked about the risk of Hamilton not completing the first two years of his contract, Schumacher said: “There is a danger if everything goes wrong. “I think if Lewis feels he’s not living up to his own expectations, he’ll say so.”

Totally focused and single-minded, Hamilton is virtually impossible to win when he’s in the right car and early signs suggest he may be able to do so upon his arrival at Maranello.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur will be happy with Ferrari’s progress in 2024 but will know there is still potential to be unleashed next year. Ralf Schumacher on how the Italian press treats Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari

Schumacher knows better than anyone how the Italian press behaves towards Ferrari drivers.

He saw how his brother Michael was treated during the difficult times he faced at the Scuderia in his early years, and more importantly, how his teammates were treated when he won five consecutive championships.

Asked how long Hamilton will be protected by the Italian media, Schumacher said: “The expectations are high, as is emotions. You will not have patience for more than six months if things are not doing well.

“He’s not used to outside pressure. In Italy, the clocks tick a little differently. “Even during Michael’s time, they tried to fire Jean Todt when success was lackluster.

“Michael stopped him and we ended up with a happy ending. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to happen for Lewis.

“But maybe he’ll get lucky and the car will suit him.” So everything could be fine. But I have my doubts.”

Hamilton is desperate to make his first test with Ferrari, but he was denied the opportunity in post-season testing. Prior to the test before the season, the TPC [Test of the previous car], which is running in Fiorano, may be the first taste of his life as a Ferrary driver.
