Lewis Hamilton’s recent critical remarks have illuminated the uncertainty at Mercedes, according to former Formula One team manager Guenther Steiner.
Lewis Hamilton has already secured a seat at Ferrari, according to former Formula One team manager Guenther Steiner, so he is no longer holding his tongue at Mercedes. Steiner warned the British player that his future with the Silver Arrows is not secure, pointing out that the opposite is true for George Russell.
Throughout the season, Hamilton has become more outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the Mercedes W15. In February, he announced that he would be joining rivals Ferrari at the end of the year. The seven-time world champion called his current car the “worst” he has ever driven during the recent Brazilian Grand Prix, before calling it a “plank of wood” in front of the media.
After recovering from his Q1 elimination to earn a single point on race day, the 39-year-old racing legend referred to the weekend as a “disaster of a weekend” on the team radio after the race. Later, he referred to the vehicle as “unacceptable.”
“Having these terrible races in the second half of the season is devastating,” Hamilton swore. All I can say, though, is that although we are making an effort, it is unquestionably unacceptable and insufficient for the weekends.
Steiner, the former principal of the Haas team, thinks Hamilton is being much more straightforward because his job at Mercedes is secure because he has a seat with Ferrari. Russell, whose seat is set for 2025 but whose contract expires at the end of the year, is reportedly still eager to demonstrate that he deserves to be Mercedes’ top driver in the long run, according to the Italian.
“The car is what it is,” Steiner said on the Red Flag podcast. On a good day, it’s currently the fourth best car, not the best. I believe it’s easier for Lewis to complain because he knows he’s leaving anyhow.
“George is eager to do anything that will demonstrate his leadership of the team going forward. He must demonstrate this since he is aware that his seat is not completely secure when his Mercedes contract expires, so he tries his hardest and gives it his all.
Conversely, Lewis dislikes the vehicle and its handling and is aware that he has lost three races as a result.
Steiner’s remarks follow Mercedes world champion Nico Rosberg’s September statement that Russell’s seat is “not safe at all.” Concerns about Russell’s future replaced rumors that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was interested in Red Bull star and current championship leader Max Verstappen. Kimi Antonelli, a rookie, will be Russell’s partner starting next year.
Russell is currently sixth in the driver standings after recording one official race victory, two pole positions, and two fastest laps this season. The 26-year-old Briton stated that he has at least some sort of agreement with his employers and says he isn’t listening to rumors.
Earlier in the year, Russell told reporters, “To be honest, we haven’t discussed it at all.” Mercedes is my manager, and I’ve been with this team for a very long time. We’ve always stated that we will be working together indefinitely. There are many discussions going on that are interesting to read, but I’m not interested in any of that. All I’m thinking about is driving.”
