Jos Verstappen tears into Red Bull with dig over why son Max is ‘aggressive’ on track

At the Mexican Grand Prix, race officials gave Max Verstappen two penalties.

After his son Max was sanctioned at the Mexican Grand Prix, Jos Verstappen pulled out Red Bull. Four corners later, it was determined that the world championship leader had gained an advantage by forcing title rival Lando Norris off the track, for which he received a reprimand.

Despite receiving two distinct 10-second penalties for the incidents, he finished sixth.

Norris finished in second place, reducing Verstappen’s lead to 47 points overall. With four Grand Prix races left in 2024, the McLaren cars are currently faster.

This season, Jos has been outspoken in his criticism of Red Bull. He has since claimed that the team’s cars’ current subpar performance has compelled his son to drive aggressively.

He told De Telegraaf, “He is doing everything he can to win the title, and the car is not good enough, so he has to do this.” “However, Max is not going to alter his driving style because some stewards are uncomfortable with him anyhow.”

At the very least, Verstappen Sr. acknowledged that the second penalty was warranted. But as he approaches a third straight title, he also cautioned that his son would not be altering his strategy.

“Max’s second moment might have been a little too much if you consider what happened on Sunday,” he continued. However, he is allowing this to pass him by. No matter how much time you spend discussing it, it will not change anything. Max must drive as he pleases.

“The biggest problem that I have is that today was a bad day in terms of race pace,” the 27-year-old said, also criticizing the RB15’s performance.

Once more, that was evident on both the hard and medium tires. We are too slow, which is the issue, which is why I am placed in those kinds of situations. That was my issue.

This weekend, Verstappen and his team will travel to Brazil, where the Dutchman is still a step away from winning the title four times. However, Horner’s team has now dropped to third place in the Constructors’ race rankings.

With 566 points, McLaren is currently ahead of Ferrari by 29. With the race in São Paulo coming up, followed by the Grands Prix in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, Red Bull is now 54 points behind the British squad.
