Although Lewis Hamilton has won seven world championships so far, things could soon change.
Due to the financial and psychological toll that his lawsuit against F1, the FIA, and Bernie Ecclestone is taking on his life, Felipe Massa has provided a rare update on the matter.
The Brazilian finished his career without a World Championship, though in 2008, during his sophomore year in the sport, he came the closest, finishing one point behind Lewis Hamilton.
If Fernando Alonso had won the Singapore Grand Prix after teammate Nelson Piquet Jr.’s purposeful crash, Massa would have been the winner. However, Alonso’s victory went to Fernando Alonso.
The ‘Crashgate’ scandal was not made public until the following year. However, Massa filed a lawsuit in 2023 after Ecclestone stated in an interview that he was aware of Renault’s misconduct at the time, but chose to hold off on punishing them until 2009 so as not to damage the reputation of the sport.
Giving RacingNews365 an update on his legal battle, Massa said, “I hope the right thing happens, for justice, for something that was not part of the sport that severely punished me.” This is what we are fighting for, and I think it’s right—especially sixteen years later and after hearing things you never would have imagined were true.
“After that, I made the decision to assemble a sizable team of professionals from several nations. In their eyes, what transpired was unfair for the sport, and I paid a price for it.
“After hearing Bernie’s remark last year, we began to put things together, to fight, to analyze things in a professional, legal way because it was outside the bounds of the sport.”
