Lewis Hamilton backtracks on Mercedes comments after ‘speaking out in frustration’

Lewis Hamilton, who harshly criticized Mercedes for their choice of tires during the Singapore Grand Prix, now has a message of support for the team.

Following up on his criticism of Mercedes following the Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has now changed his mind.

Mercedes unexpectedly chose to start Hamilton on the faster but less resilient soft tyres after Hamilton qualified an impressive third behind Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, the two leading contenders for the championship. It was anticipated that his increased grip at the beginning of the race would enable him to put pressure on the leading two.

Nevertheless, it was soon apparent that the plan would not succeed after the seven-time world champion was unable to gain ground early on, as Hamilton dropped to sixth place by the finish. George Russell, a teammate who began the race on mediums just like the other leaders, finished fourth.

The 39-year-old, who will end his career at Ferrari, wasn’t shy about criticizing the team for their choice. After the race, Hamilton spoke at a sponsors’ event and said he was “perplexed” and “so angry” that the gamble had not paid off.

Mercedes has acknowledged that they made a mistake, with technical director James Allison referring to it as a “clear mistake.” With a supportive Instagram post that stated, “I know there has been a lot of chat around the last one and our strategy in Singapore which just didn’t work,” Hamilton has now recanted his criticism of the team. It comes naturally to me to get frustrated when that occurs, and it’s easy for me to express my frustration.

“We were aware that beginning on the soft tire was a daring and dangerous decision, but it might provide us an advantage, so in the end, I supported that advice. Additionally, we misjudged what other people might do.

“Make no mistake, though, things are cool with the team,” Hamilton continued. Like in any successful relationship, there will inevitably be low points before there are high points.

We have accomplished a great deal together because we don’t back down from difficult talks or difficult situations. We’ll stick by one another through thick and thin. Everything is love.

Some Formula One fans were taken aback by the heartfelt post, while others complimented the British driver. “LH is simply too good a leader, which is one of the key reasons for his success with Mercedes in F1,” someone wrote on X.

“I can understand that he doesn’t want his situation to worsen,” a second person said. “Ever the team player in the end,” another person remarked.
