Classy Lewis Hamilton moment made F1 rival’s ‘dream come true’ despite forgetting his name

Following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton displayed his class in a heartfelt moment.

In the aftermath of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton displayed class by stopping to congratulate Franco Colapinto. The seven-time world champion later stated that his conversation with Hamilton was the highlight of his day.

Colapinto started in just his second Grand Prix race on Sunday, but he responded to a surprise appearance in qualifying with a P8 finish, bringing his total points for the struggling Williams team to a staggering 10-point haul.

Colapinto made a statement by placing in the top 10 on the track, something that his predecessor Logan Sargeant had not done in 36 Grand Prix starts. The most decorated driver in Formula One was intrigued by the Argentine racer’s antics.

Colapinto wrote, “My best moment of the day,” alongside a photo he shared on Instagram of his conversation with Hamilton. Wow, shaking hands with @lewishamilton after a race together is so bizarre and like a dream come true.

In his post-race interview with Sky Sports F1, Hamilton discussed Colapinto’s performance in addition to praising Oliver Bearman, who scored a point on his Haas debut after taking Kevin Magnussen’s seat due to suspension.

Hamilton commented, “All I can say is that it’s really great to see talented young guys coming through and driving so well.” Oliver performed admirably, competing against him in a fair but difficult race. Indeed, I can’t recall the name of that child—Colapinto—for Williams! He performed admirably today as well.”

Colapinto’s outstanding F1 debut will cause major disruptions to the driver market. The 21-year-old Argentinean driver may look elsewhere for a full-time drive as Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz have both signed long-term contracts, meaning he will not be racing for Williams in 2025.

Maybe Mattia Binotto will notice and get up. In addition to Nico Hulkenberg, the Sauber team manager is now evaluating Valtteri Bottas and Gabriel Bortoleto for the second seat. However, Colapinto’s past results and sponsorship potential make him a competitive choice.

“They put me in a seat with such confidence and trust,” Colapinto said, securing his first F1 point. It was an extremely challenging wager that many people were unaware of. However, I want to demonstrate my abilities and why I should be given a Formula One seat.

“The concept and the chance James provided are assisting me in demonstrating that. All I’m trying to do is work hard so I can learn things quickly. I only drove a Formula One car for a few laps in Abu Dhabi last year, and that was only in two races and one Free Practice One.
