George Russell summoned for alleged Azerbaijan GP qualifying infringement

George Russell has been summoned before the stewards for allegedly neglecting to decelerate in response to yellow flags during the first qualifying session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver placed fifth in Saturday’s Mercedes qualifying session, but if the stewards find him to be at fault, the investigation’s conclusion may jeopardize that grid position.

George Russell was called because he allegedly didn’t slow down in response to yellow flags.
Ten minutes into the Q1 session at Baku City Circuit, Russell and a Mercedes representative were summoned to the stewards at 7.30 p.m. local time [4.30 p.m. BST] to discuss the alleged infraction.

The Mercedes driver feels his position was indicative of the team’s performance on Saturday, and he will start from the third row on Sunday. He expressed this belief after the practice.

“We believed that we could legitimately qualify for P4 after FP3,” he said to reporters in Baku.

“I believe we had more power and used a little less fuel than most people. Thus, fairly content.

“It’s been a recurring theme for the past five years or so, so we need to try and figure out what it is that Ferrari always seems to have up its sleeve when it comes to these street circuits, C5 tyres.

“I think I’m still five tenths behind the top guys, but my laps felt really good. Today, I was quite pleased with the vehicle.

“You can always argue that I should have received a little bit more, but that seemed to be the entirety of it.”
