Bryson DeChambeau in line for mega bonus as LIV Golf season enters crucial period

While having a great season on the PGA Tour, Bryson DeChambeau has struggled in the LIV Golf format. Nevertheless, he still has a lot of work left in the season’s final two events.

It has been an unforgettable season for Bryson DeChambeau, both on and off the golf course. His accomplishments, meanwhile, haven’t exactly translated to his LIV Golf performances.

In June, DeChambeau won the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2, defeating Rory McIlroy in a thrilling final round that will go down in history as one of the most exciting major championship finishes ever. With this victory, DeChambeau capped off an outstanding major league season in which he placed second at the PGA Championship and sixth at The Masters.

The 30-year-old’sconnectionwith her fans has also changed significantly. After initially being viewed as a bit of an outsider, DeChambeau has grown to become one of the sport’s most adored players and has a newfound ability to connect with fans.

Still, it’s been a frustrating season on LIV by his own high standards. After becoming a founding member of the breakaway circuit in 2022, the two-time major champion had an incredible season in 2021, winning twice towards the end of the race to place fourth overall.

But in the Saudi Arabia-funded league that travels the world, DeChambeau has only managed one top-three finish in 2024. He has yet to win. Prior to Thursday’s penultimate tournament of the campaign at The Greenbrier, he has racked up six top-10s in 11 events, demonstrating that his performance levels have not declined significantly.

Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm are leading the race for the Individual Championship title and its £14 million bonus, meaning that even though DeChambeau is currently in eighth place, there is no mathematical way he can win the season-long order of merit.

Still, DeChambeau has a remote chance of finishing in the top three, so there is still hope for him. If something extraordinary happens to his competitors, making them falter in the final two events, he might not be able to secure the £6.2 million reward for second place.

But if he finishes the season strong, he can still win the £3.1 million bonus for finishing in third place. DeChambeau is now 52.33 points behind Tyrrell Hatton, who is in third place, heading into this week’s competition. When the season finale begins on September 13 at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois, a victory at The Greenbrier could put him squarely in the running for a top-three finish, with 40 points up for grabs for the winner.

Although DeChambeau’s season has been difficult personally, his team, Crushers GC, is top of the team standings. His team, which consists of Charles Howell III, Paul Casey, and Anirban Lahiri, will secure their spot as the top seed for the Team Championship in Dallas on September 20 with two more outstanding performances.
