Golf icon Gary Player fires Donald Trump message to R&A after Open snub

Donald Trump purchased Turnberry in 2009, so it hasn’t hosted The Open Championship since. However, Gary Player has pushed the R&A to reconsider its stance on Scotland’s “best course.”

Nine-time major champion Gary Player has backed US presidential candidate Donald Trump and urged the R&A to add Turnberry back to The Open Championship schedule.

Top100GolfCourses.com ranks Turnberry’s Ailsa course as the 10th best course worldwide and the third best in the UK, but it hasn’t hosted The Open since 2009, when Stewart Cink defeated Tom Watson in a memorable final. After spending £200 million on renovations, the property was reopened two years after the contentious Trump purchased it in 2014.

The R&A hosts the Open, and last year CEO Martin Slumbers stated, “We will not return any of our championships there until we are confident that any coverage at Turnberry would be about golf, about the golf course, and about the championship.”

The 78-year-old Trump is running for reelection to the presidency. From 2016 until Joe Biden’s removal, he served in the White House. When America goes to the polls in a few months, Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, will face Trump, who is vying to become president once again. Biden, a Democrat, will not seek reelection in November.

Though the R&A has chosen not to hold its flagship event at one of his venues—despite the venue being among the best in the world—the outspoken Republican nominee is no stranger to controversy in both his business and political dealings.

However, Player, an 88-year-old friend of the former president, feels that the best golf course in Scotland should host the Claret Jug once more.

“It has to return,” Player informed Bunkered. “Equity in existence. Donald Trump may have done something, but what about all the previous presidents? Each of them made a mistake. Not just the President Trump.

Each and every one of them. The Bible says to forgive us our transgressions as well as those who transgress against us.

Not having The Open return to Turnberry, the greatest golf course, is cruel, unfair, and wrong. along with Carnoustie. The two greatest golf courses in Scotland are Carnoustie and Trump Turnberry.

Prior to the election, the South African made no secret of his allegiances; he was granted the Presidential Medal of Freedom a mere twenty-four hours after the riot by Trump supporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

Player continued, “I went into Trump Turnberry the other day; he’s made some really good investments in Scotland.” We get out to play golf virtually every three weeks. He’s a really kind man, and I find it unbelievable what I’ve read about him. I’ve read that the opposition is worried that he will destroy democracy. Instead of undermining our democracy, he will strengthen it.
