A late call-up for Charles Howell III, John Catlin was a standout performer in Nashville as a reserve player for Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC at LIV Golf.
After playing admirably at LIV Golf Nashville, where he replaced Bryson DeChambeau at LIV Golf Nashville, American golfer John Catlin is aiming for a long-term position with LIV Golf. Due to his impressive performance, there is now curiosity about Catlin’s possible future in the league.
Charles Howell III, a Crushers member since 2022, has been replaced by Catlin, a reserve player for the Crushers GC. DeChambeau disclosed that Howell was unable to compete because of a left leg injury.
“I received a text from him about four or five days ago, saying, ‘Man, I apologize, but I will not be able to play.'”
“He said, ‘I broke my leg in two,'” revealed DeChambeau.
The 33-year-old American reserve has, surprisingly, had a big impact. After two rounds, he shot two straight 5-under rounds to sit at 10-under. As a result, he finished in second place, barely ahead of DeChambeau, the team captain, who finished third at 9-under.
Sunday afternoon is when round three of LIV Nashville is scheduled to begin, with Tyrrell Hatton leading the field at 13 under. Still, Catlin’s performance drew the attention of golf fans on the internet, giving them renewed hope that he could make the team full-time.
If I claimed it didn’t seep in, I’d be lying, but once more, I have little control over that. The captains will decide that, Catlin said after the round. The managers will decide that. The team organization will decide that.
“If I just keep doing what I’m doing, things will work out. I’m going to keep working hard and I hope I get more opportunities to show off my skills,” he hopefulally continued. “Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long to find out. I can tell you that I would really like to be outside right now.”
Catlin has had an incredible ride on her path to recognition. He suffered a setback in 2023 when he lost his DP World Tour card, but he persevered and qualified for the Asian Tour.
Six-time Asian Tour champion Catlin made waves in the 2024 season with back-to-back victories, taking the Macau International Series and then dominating the Saudi Open presented by PIF by seven shots.
With a third-round 11-under-par 59 to tie the Asian Tour record for the first-ever sub-60 round, his victory in Macau was more than just another victory. In a thrilling playoff match, he narrowly defeated Spanish player David Puig, adding to his impressive resume of victories that already included the Thailand Open in 2019 and the Austrian Open in 2021.
