Rory McIlroy’s neighbours react to Erica Stoll divorce after living close by to couple

After ten years of marriage, Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll, who wed in 2017, are getting a divorce.

The news that European golf superstar Rory McIlroy is divorcing his wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage has taken members of the upscale Florida golf club by surprise.

According to court documents filed in Palm Beach County, the Northern Irish star announced the dissolution of their ten-year relationship by filing for divorce on May 13. The pair first met in 2012 while attending the Ryder Cup. Two years later, they began dating, and in 2017 they were married in front of a star-studded audience that included Jamie Dornan and Stevie Wonder.

In August 2020, they subsequently celebrated the birth of their daughter, Poppy. However, it appears that they are divorcing as McIlroy was recently seen at this week’s Valhalla Golf Club PGA Championship without his wedding band. Moreover, on May 16, Stoll was also observed to be ringless.

The couple has lived in a South Florida community for the past five years, and the news of their separation has shocked some of the locals. “Rory is fairly down to earth for such a big star,” a source told PEOPLE. He can be pleasant to be around and is quite private, but he simply detests being in the spotlight.”

The Northern Irish golfer plays at Bear’s Club, where members, according to an insider quoted in the publication, “are talking about this and wondering what happened.” Before saying, “We are wondering what happened,” they said that McIlroy was “so private that there wasn’t a lot of speculation concerning his family life.”

To many, the news of their divorce has been shocking. McIlroy told Golf Channel about how they first got together, saying, “That week, Erica was always the one checking us in and out.”

She was always in the car park over there because she worked at transportation. He was proud of their developing relationship and remarked, “But yeah, it’s still cool to look around and think about that week, and obviously everything that’s happened since then.”

The Independent was informed by him about how their friendship turned into a romantic relationship, saying, “What I love about it is that we were friends before anything romantic happened.” After some time spent together, we came to the conclusion that there was more.”

“Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low-key,” McIlroy said in an interview with the Irish Independent, looking back on the support his partner gave him throughout his career. She is a very private person who doesn’t like to share things publicly, but right now, that aspect of my life is great.”
