Carlos Alcaraz in worrying scenes after brutal tennis retirement at Rio Open

The World No.2 couldn’t continue after worrying scenes at the Rio Open.

After Carlos Alcaraz retired after just two games in his Rio Open match, the tennis world was taken aback as he hobbled off the court and was carried away. As Alcaraz began his campaign against Thiago Monteiro on the second point, the World No. 2 collapsed to the ground in agony. Alcaraz lost to Cameron Norrie in last year’s final.

Alcaraz slid and seemed to get stuck in the clay, tripping and falling on his ankle in an unsightly scene. After a lengthy delay, Monteiro crossed the net with grace to assist his rival in getting back on his feet.

Amazingly, Alcaraz managed to play for a few more points, but he was unable to continue at the change of ends. Alcaraz left the game hurt, as pictures revealed his ankle had swelled up considerably following the severe fall.

“That’s it, how unfortunate for the event,” the pundit remarked. “However, he needs to defend himself. Carlos Alcaraz has a long season ahead of him, and there is no reason to take a chance.”

Alcaraz apologized to supporters after the game for not signing autographs, and video from the event showed him hobbling toward a golf cart. Alcaraz’s participation in the Netflix tennis match against Rafa Nadal in two weeks as part of a major exhibition event raised immediate concerns.

Due to his injury concerns, Alcaraz may also fall in the rankings as Jannik Sinner, who has had an outstanding season to far, has the potential to gain significant points in the upcoming months. At Indian Wells, the Spaniard has a thousand points to defend. Sinner trails Alcaraz by just 535 points, and the winner of the Australian Open has a good chance of passing the Spaniard at Roland Garros.

Tennis world concerned for Carlos Alcaraz

After the game, Monteiro, Alcaraz’s opponent, expressed sympathy for the latter after the vicious incident that occurred so early in their match. After the game, Monteiro remarked, “This is so strange—it was the second point of the match.”

“It didn’t seem all that serious on the court, but when I saw it on the big screen, it was a terrible turn of events. I can only wish him well on his road to recovery; he is a rising star in the younger generation.” And as the 20-year-old tries to regain the incredible form that propelled him to the top of the game the previous year, supporters were left feeling concerned for him.

Alcaraz’s injury follows a shocking loss to Nicolas Jarry of Chile in the Argentina Open semifinal earlier this week. Although the Spaniard was defending his title, Alcaraz suffered his fourth defeat on clay in his previous 31 games since the beginning of 2023 with the loss to Jarry. In addition, it was only his third defeat in the previous 49 games against opponents who were not among the world’s top 20.
