Sergio “Checo” Perez finds himself in a tight spot at Red Bull, with questions about his future with the team hanging over his head.
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have both voiced their concerns. Marko has repeatedly asked Perez to improve in order to prevent a possible dismissal, while Horner, the team principal, has emphasized that the team will support him.
Marko and Horner have both previously alluded to the possibility of extending Perez’s tenure beyond the forthcoming 2024 season, despite the uncertainty surrounding his position.
Known for his direct criticism, Marko had previously brought up candidates like Liam Lawson and Daniel Ricciardo to take Perez’s seat after 2025.
Perez needs ‘good season’
Remarkably, though, the seasoned advisor has now expressed an openness to extending the agreement with the Mexican driver in a statement.
“Verstappen and Perez may also be in the lineup in 2025 if Checo has a strong season,” Marko stated to sport.de.
What constitutes a successful season for Perez with Red Bull is yet to be determined, but it is expected to entail multiple high-grid qualifying runs and a pattern of consistently finishing second to Max Verstappen, with the occasional setback.
