European Ryder Cup stars Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton have offered thoughts on the recent speculation linking them with a switch to LIV Golf.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood says he won’t be joining LIV Golf anytime soon as he’s still chasing his childhood dreams.
Fleetwood, 32, has become the latest player to be linked with a move from the established tours to the Saudi-backed league.
According to a report from Telegraph Sport, the Englishman declined a lucrative offer recently. He was a key player in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory in 2023.
LIV has not yet finalized their roster for their 2024 campaign, which begins in Mexico in two weeks.
The four-man squad that Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, signed with LIV in December for a reported £450 million, has not yet announced any additions.
Tony Finau is believed to have been Rahm’s target, but the American decided to stick with the PGA Tour after having a change of heart.
Finau wrote on Instagram, “I’m not leaving,” in response to growing rumors that he was about to join LIV.
According to a source that GolfMagic has spoken with, Finau requested a far higher payment than what was suggested.
Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, was supposed to join LIV, but that deal apparently fell through.
The Iron Heads led by Kevin Na are also lacking a player. The squad led by Martin Kaymer is also searching for a fourth and last recruit.
According to the Telegraph Sport report, Nicolai Hojgaard, another European Ryder Cupper, also rejected LIV.
At the Dubai Desert Classic, Fleetwood told reporters, “There’s nothing going on.”
“I have spent the last two years performing here in Dubai, and I am currently performing here. In terms of news, I’m really not that interesting, and that’s okay.
“People have been approached by LIV for a very long time, so I don’t think it’s shocking news that they are still doing so.”
“Some people will go and some people won’t,” Fleetwood went on.
We’ll either all play together or not at some point. Like everyone else, I’ll just have to wait and see.
“I’m still working to improve as a golfer and pursuing my childhood goals.
“I want to be where I am right now, but who knows if that changes in the future.”
Tyrrell Hatton of England is another clear target for Rahm and LIV.
At the Ryder Cup, Hatton, 32, and Rahm, 29 together formed a formidable tandem. The two have spoken kindly of one another over the years.
The No. 15 in the world has continuously played down LIV rumors.
However, it seemed from his response in Dubai that he would at the very least be open to considering a switch.
When asked whether he was happy participating in PGA and DP World Tour events, Hatton replied, “As of right now, yeah.”
