LIV Golf’s Jon Rahm has taken a not-so-subtle dig at the decision to award Scottie Scheffler the PGA Tour player of the year award.
Jon Rahm has taken a subtle dig at the decision to be overlooked as the PGA Tour’s player of the year after Scottie Scheffler won the award back-to-back.
On January 10, Rahm surprised everyone by appearing on The Jim Rome Show, even though he had earlier stated he was going to step back from the spotlight following his controversial decision to switch tours.
For about ten minutes, the reigning Masters champion talked to Rome about why he chose to join LIV even though he had earlier stated he had no intention of leaving.
He claimed to have chosen his team name, but he wouldn’t say what it is or which players will be on it just yet. However, there are some rumors.
Rahm waxed poetic about team golf and “the chance to create something new” after making it clear that he had joined for the money.
In addition, he shared his opinions on the PGA Tour players who chose Scheffler as their player of the year despite Rahm’s four victories.
As you may remember, Rahm prevailed over Brooks Koepka to win the green jacket at the Masters in April by maintaining his composure.
Despite not winning a major, Scheffler was a constant force during the season. In Phoenix and the prestigious Players, he also triumphed.
Rahm emphasized Scheffler claimed that although he had an amazing year, winning hardware is usually what matters.
“Oh man, listen, Scottie had an amazing year,” he said in his explanation. Wonderful year. Not to diminish what he accomplished, but in the past, hardware has essentially determined the player of the year.
“I was essentially the more reliable player the year Patrick Cantlay won; in 2021, I had a major, I believe I had 16 top-10s, and I understood why Patrick won.”
“Maybe this year, due to his exceptional ball-striking ability, the voters chose to vote for someone else, but ultimately, it’s a well-deserved victory.”
Rory’s words were very mature
Before beginning his season in Dubai, Rory McIlroy made headlines by admitting he was too critical of the players who had joined LIV.
Additionally, he called Rahm’s choice to join the rival league a wise business decision.
Phil Mickelson jumped on his remarks, advising pro-LIV supporters not to “pile on” McIlroy for what appeared to be a U-turn.
The moment to put an end to the animosity between the tours was when Mickelson wrote on X McIlroy’s change in tone.
Rahm stated to the program, “I believe the tension has decreased.” Rory is an amazing player who has accomplished a great deal.
“Stepping back and admitting when you’ve made a mistake requires a great deal of maturity, especially when you’re speaking to a global audience like he has.
“Well, he’s been one of my best friends. He responded in a really encouraging way.
“He’s a good friend who has remained a good friend, so it’s obvious that I’m sad and he’s sad that we won’t be competing together directly all year round.”
“We all want golf to be in the best possible situation to give the fans and spectators what they need to see,” Rahm continued.
