Christian Horner rubs salt in Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff’s wounds at Abu Dhabi GP

Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff haven’t appreciated some comments from Christian Horner this week.

Christian Horner has risked further angst from Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes after suggesting that it’s only natural for the 38-year-old to consider his options given that his last F1 race win came over two years ago. Horner caused a stir this week when he claimed that Hamilton had made an approach earlier this year to sound out a possible move to Red Bull alongside Sergio Perez.

Since then, the Red Bull team principal has recanted those comments, claiming that Anthony Hamilton was the one who initiated contact. However, Hamilton, who called Horner “lonely” for attempting to stir things up at Mercedes, is still not happy with his remarks.

Toto Wolff expressed his frustration with Horner’s remarks by saying, “I just don’t know what drives the guy.”

We simply don’t know how he thinks in order to come up with these ideas.

Horner has now raised the possibility of further resentment from the Mercedes camp by bringing up Hamilton’s winless streak as a possible topic of discussion regarding his future.

“It’s been two years since Lewis won a race,” he said to Sky Sports. “You’re able to comprehend what people are asking.

It makes perfect sense and is typical for those kinds of things to occur. Anthony is a really nice guy, and we’ve always had a great relationship with him, but since there are no seats available, the story is really nonexistent.

“I understand that we’re trying to wrap up things here before the end of the year, but this is kind of scraping the barrel a little.”

In the tense race for the championship with Max Verstappen in 2021, Hamilton’s last race victory came at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Since then, Verstappen’s dominance in Formula One has been unstoppable by the British racing superstar.

By the time of today’s season finale in Abu Dhabi, the 26-year-old had already won all but three races this year. His 2023 season has surpassed Alberto Ascari’s record of 75% winning percentage to become the most dominant campaign in Formula One history.
