Wolff issues `basics’ plea to Mercedes amid Hamilton confidence issue

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stressed the need to get back to basics in 2024 to address the car issues that Lewis Hamilton has raised concerns about this season.

While Mercedes has high hopes of returning to championship form this year after changes to Formula 1’s technical rules.

However, the team remains winless in 2023 and has fewer podiums than its two customer-powered rivals, Aston Martin and McLaren, despite currently occupying second place overall.

In addition to their performance issues, Hamilton revealed earlier this year that he had struggled with the W14’s cockpit position, noting that it was too far forward.

Wolff stressed the importance of ensuring similar complaints do not exist with either of their riders in the upcoming season.

Wolf: The driver does not trust the car

“We have to go back to the basics,” Wolff told Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I don’t want to hear Lewis say, ‘My cockpit is too far forward’ anymore.”

We know what we understand and will not pay attention to what we do not understand,” he added.

“The biggest problem is that the driver has no confidence in the car. We need to give them solid foundations to score good scores.
