Red Bull team principal Christian Horner asked Sergio Perez to challenge his teammate in 2024.
Oracle Red Bull Racing dominated the 2023 championship, claiming the constructors’ crown with six rounds remaining. Star driver Max Verstappen outclassed his rivals, claiming the drivers’ title with a second-place finish at the Qatar Sprint Grand Prix.
On the other hand, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez crashed out of the race in the 19-lap event, and finished 10th in the main race after 15 seconds of violating the track’s penalty limits.
Pressure has been mounting on the Mexican driver for some time, with speculation that he could be fired from the Milton Keynes-based company.
While team principal Christian Horner has assured that won’t happen, he recently asked Pérez to improve his performance in 2024 if he wants to keep his Red Bull seat beyond next year. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Horner admitted Perez was significantly out of rhythm with his rival, who is now three-time world champion. He say:
“You know, Mercedes, it’s very tight between them, Ferrari is very tight between them, Oscar, he did very well as a rookie, very tight with Lando.”
We really need Checo to come in this transfer window because this year not so much, but definitely next year we need him to reach his full potential.
Can Perez keep P2 on the rankings?
The Red Bull boss continued to say that the team will discuss with Perez about his recent poor form. He told the media:
“I think we really need to sit down with Checo because we know what he’s capable of and he’s not in that form right now. We really need him to get back to that form to stay in second place.” two in the championship.
Pérez is threatened by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in a fierce battle for second place in the Drivers’ Championship. Red Bull looks to claim its first double-digit ranking in its 18-year history as an F1 team; Will the Mexican player be able to keep his composure and maintain second place?
The 33-year-old revealed his confidence is at an all-time high after working with a mental coach to improve his motivation to succeed. He hopes to turn his confidence into tangible results at the remaining five Grands Prix.
