Tiger Woods could return to Ryder Cup as 2025 captain in ‘special’ match-up

Tiger Woods hasn’t played in the Ryder Cup since 2018 – and his next appearance could be as the USA captain at Bethpage Black, New York in 2025

Tiger Woods has been touted as the USA’s next Ryder Cup captain in what could be a dream match-up in 2025.

As Europe celebrated regaining the trophy with a 16.5-11.5 victory in Rome, the US inquest has already begun. Questions will be asked of Zach Johnson’s captaincy, with a new leader set to be installed for the next match Bethpage Black, New York.

And golfing GOAT Woods is already being mentioned as a potential successor. He missed out as a player this year due to injury. As he will be nearly 50 in 2025, he is unlikely to make the team as a player.

Azinger even suggested an opposite number, European Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia, whose involvement with LIV Golf ruled him out of the 2023 match. However, if bridges can be rebuilt following the sport’s civil war, the Spaniard could captain the side in the future.

Another golf fan said: “Next time there’s a Ryder Cup, we just might see Tiger as captain. Paul Azinger was already hinting today that it could be Tiger vs Sergio at Bethpage.” A third added: “That would be special.”

However, if the victorious European team get their way, Luke Donald will keep the job for 2025. The Englishman has been lauded while his players chanted “two more years” during the celebrations.

“I think everyone sitting here would be very happy to have him again,” said Rory McIlroy in the post-match press conference. Asked if he would accept if offered the role again, Donald said: “I want to enjoy this moment right now with these guys… I haven’t been asked yet. I am going to enjoy this one right now. We will figure that one out later.”
